Panoramic view of the mesas of the Pajarito ("Little Bird") plateau, from Tsankawi ruin near Bandelier National Monument. The plateau was formed from ash and pyroclastic flows from the Valles Caldera supervolcano eruptions. Deposits of this ash can be found as far away as Iowa. Water cut canyons into the soft ash, leaving the surrounding mesas. The banded colors in the cliffs show the layers of different flows.
In the distance to the left are the Jemez mountains, the remains of the Valles Calderas supervolcano.
Tsankawi ruin is an unexcavated Ancient Puebloan settlement located on the mesa top from which this photo was taken. It's reached following the original trails of the Ancient Peubloans. There are ruins of stone walls on the mesa tops as well as excellent cave rooms along the mesa edge. Tsankawi is a unit of Bandelier National Monument.
